CHINA’S NOT YET WON TAIWAN OVER
As US prepares to sell 66 advanced fighter jets to Taiwan, complications are bound to increase in Sino-Taiwan and Sino-US relations. The $3.1 billion deal is to supply F-16s to the renegade province that vows to maintain its independent identity sacrosanct against the intimidating Chinese pressure. Dangling precariously between independence and forced unification with the People’s Republic of China (PRC; mainland China), Taiwan happens to be an important beacon post for Americans in preventing a Chinese Long March to South-East Asia. Guided by the Taiwan Relation Act, the American move is more to prevent the use of force by the PRC and to delay the unification till perpetuity.
